15th - 18th April 2011
On the 17th April 2011 the Peak District National Park, Britain’s first National Park, celebrates its 60th birthday. Britain’s National Parks are more than just protected countryside; they are a place set aside for all of us to roam the land and to enjoy at leisure the outstanding natural beauty that lies on our doorstep. And it’s not to be taken for granted – if you hike anywhere in the world you’ll see how privileged we are to have such freedom here in the UK. And so for this reason we think the 60th birthday of our first park must be celebrated.
Outline Plan:
This is a four day trek designed to encapsulate the essence of the Park’s contrasting beauty and its history inside one long weekend. Included is the option to cut this down and to do the middle two days only (Saturday and Sunday). Either way it won’t be a “stroll in the park” – with four long days of trekking:
Friday - Glossop to Castleton
Start: 11:00 Distance: 17.3 miles Height gain: 864m
Tough hill walking day taking us through the high and wild moors of Bleaklow and a traverse of Kinder Scout. An iconic day since this is arguably where it all started with the Kinder Mass Tresspass in 1932.
Saturday - Castleton to Bakewell
Start: 09:00 Distance: 17.6 miles Height gain: 673m
Wonderful trekking through the Hope Valley and then along the River Derwent. The day leads us from Castleton famous for its Norman built castle, and finishes in the historic market town of Bakewell. En route we take in Eyam famous for its self imposed quarantine during the plague.
Sunday - Bakewell to Youlegreave
Start: 09:00 Distance: 14.1 miles Height gain: 599m
Following the wilderness of the Dark Peak on Friday this trek takes on a total contrast with an exploration of the beautiful White Peak including Monsal and Lathkill Dales.
Monday - Youlegreave to Matlock
Start: 09:00 Distance: 10.7 miles Height gain: 498m
Our final day continues this wonderful voyage walking through the White Peak and culminating in the Roman town of Matlock Bath.
Accommodation available: YHA / B&B occupy the end point for each trek day. (N.B. not included in the price).
Food: Each evening we can eat in a local pub. You can bring food for lunches, or get them made wherever you choose to stay. Some shops will be found en-route also which could be of help.
Fitness level:
Even carrying just a light pack, this walk will take its toll on your legs. The full four days may be a bit of undertaking for a complete novice: maybe join us for some of our Free Walking Weekends first to get an idea of what you can do or to get some training in might be a good idea?
Transport:
This is another weekend when the best thing to do is to leave the car at home. Finish work, and get on the train – it’s truly liberating. We start late on the first day giving you the option to get to Glossop on the Friday morning. If you prefer to trek the middle two days only get a train to Hope and then a cab (or walk) the few miles to Castleton for Saturday. (Or we can meet en-route in Hope Saturday morning). We finish the trek in Youlegreave on the Sunday where bus services will take you back to Castleton or onwards to Matlock (where we finish on Monday) and where there is a decent rail service.
Price
per person (guiding only): £175 (4 days) or £95 (2 days)
Leader / client ratio: not exceeding 1:6
