Kiwi
Explorer - Nelson Lakes
Arriving Nelson 9th February 2007
Finishing in Nelson 18th February
This is the ultimate trekking adventure in New Zealand. (Ok - we're
not being objective at all - this is our considered opinion. You probably
have never heard of the Travers Sabine trek - and there's a clue why
it's such a great route to follow for a start!) For those of you that
want to explore a country rich with beauty and adventure abound at every
corner this is the trek for you. It combines wonderful azure blue lakes
with the alpine outback and so much more to boot. It's been hard planning
this one - there's so much to see and do here in NZ - but we think this
is our best recommendation for a visit to the country that seems to
have it all.

Timing
This
is a February expedition with a view to getting the best of New Zealand's
weather. In turn visibility should be fine, and the chance of rain low.
However, bring waterproofs as advised in the packing list.
Equipment
The kit
list specifically required for this expedition will be posted to you
in our client's expedition handbook. But in the meantime consider buying
some good walking boots and start wearing them in
now. No technical
kit is required, though you will need kit for the trek such as a sleeping
bag and a good fitting back pack.
Level
of Fitness
The
trek is long and some days may feel demanding. Though the trek is spaced
out over a long period of shortish days, there are no porters in NZ!
Hence some degree of preparation is required for this expedition: the
fitter you are the more you will enjoy yourself on the trek. If you
don't normally get out much it is never too soon to start. Exercise
regularly each week to develop your cardiovascular system and stamina.
At weekends, go and explore some countryside, maybe take a pack and
do some camping. As a rule of thumb, if you can comfortably walk 10
miles (16km) with a 10kg/20lb pack, then you should be fine on this
trip.
Roughing
It
All
our trips involve a degree of 'roughing it'. On trek, showers are not
available and you will be expected to help out with cooking chores in
the mornings and evenings. Other than that, you will find it all a most
civilised experience - flushing toilets and all! My, whatever next?!
