Classic
Himalaya - Nepal, The Annapurna Circuit
Arrives Kathmandu 4th November 2007
Departs Kathmandu 23rd November 2007
Trekking Nepal's Annapurna Circuit is a classic walking holiday! From
the moment you arrive in Kathmandu you are greeted with streets teeming
with life and adventure - it's almost like arriving on the set of an
Indiana Jones movie! On the trek you will experience variety and beauty
in both the landscapes you walk through and in the peoples you meet
along this age old trading route. The trek encompasses the Thorong Pass
at 5416m, the holy pilgrimage site of Muktinath where earth, wind, water
and fire meet naturally and the world's deepest gorge the Kali Gandaki.
It is totally non-technical, though its challenge must not be underestimated:
hence we allow plenty of time in the ascent to the top. This is a tea
house trek, basic but the best hospitality you will find anywhere!

Timing
This Nepal Trek is a November expedition with a view to getting the
best of Nepali weather. In turn visibility should be fine, and the chance
of rain low. However, bring waterproofs as advised in the packing list,
and warm clothes for the higher altitudes.
Equipment
The kit list specifically required for this trekking expedition will
be posted on our website around September. But in the meantime consider
buying some good walking boots and start wearing them in . . . now. No technical
kit is required, though a 3 season plus sleeping bag will be much appreciated
at the higher altitudes.
Level of Fitness
This Himalayan walking holiday is long (around 200km) and the altitude
to 5416m makes it demanding, so the trek is spaced out over a long period
of shortish days, hence some degree of preparation is required for this
expedition. The fitter you are the more you will enjoy yourself on the
trek. If you don't normally get out much it is never too soon to start.
Exercise regularly each week to develop your cardiovascular system and
stamina. At weekends, go and explore some countryside, maybe take a
pack and do some camping. As a rule of thumb, if you can comfortably
walk 10 miles (16km) then you should be fine on this trip.
Roughing It
All our trips involve a degree of 'roughing it'. On trek, showers are
available, though we are reluctant to encourage use for environmental
reasons, unless they are electric. However, the facilities are generally
good, and in our experience hygiene is of a high order in the tea houses
in which we visit. Back in Kathmandu and Pokhara, the hotels we use
are clean and comfortable and good places to relax, while not ostentatious.
Price (excluding flights) : UK £950
Maximum
number of places on this trip :
The number of places available on this trip is limited
to a maximum of twelve (12) people.
Price is inclusive as far as possible :
Includes practically everything. It will include all accommodation,
park permits, guides and porters. It will not cover your meals when
not on trek, such as when you are in Kathmandu, nor will it cover any
individual sightseeing undertaken in Kathmandu or Pokhara. Other items
not included: travel insurance, passports, visas, inoculations, excess
baggage, and items of personal nature such as drinks, souvenirs and
laundry. We would recommend bringing another $15 US per day to cover
meals not provided and snacks etc. This will easily cover it.
Price includes :
-
Western tour leader
- Local specialist guides
- All accommodation
- All in-country transport
- Fully supported trek with porters
- Meals on trek
Flights
These should be arranged independently. For best prices we would recommend
checking prices with www.ebookers.com,
www.bridgetheworld.co.uk,
www.flightcentre.com.
Be sure to reconfirm all flights prior to departure. Also, if
you can stay a while longer - we'd well recommend it - there's plenty
more to do - be it rafting, on safari, sightseeing or simply relaxing
by the lake in Pokhara - you won't regret an extra day or two spent
in this fine region.

Everest Base Camp Trek . . . why we don't do this
It's true - the trek up to Everest Base Camp is a beautiful one to the base of the world's biggest mountain. And it's also true that if you are going to come all the way to Nepal then why not see the world's highest mountain - Everest?
Well we believe that by trekking the Annapurna Circuit that the route is more interesting since it is different everyday. The scenery, people, views, food and the challenge changes daily. This is a circular trek and at no point will you retrace your steps. This is not so with the EBC trek.
Also we aren't keen to walk along a route inundated with other trekkers, guides, cooks and porters as is the case with the EBC trek. And besides - who wants to get to the start point of another person's adventure? The feeling of success and achievement as you gain the high pass (the world's highest pass) at Thorong La 5416m is phenomenal - and this is all the more so because when you get there you won't see a tent city.
Last of all if you want to see Everest - take a flight up to it after doing this trek - you'll see a lot more than from the base camp - and flights cost around £60 per person and leave daily from Kathmandu.
Looking for a great trek through the Himalaya? Make it the Annapurna Circuit!
