Frontier Adventure - Outer Mongolia Horseback Trek

Arrives Ulaan Baatar: 7th July 2007
Departs Ulaan Baatar: 20th July 2007

If you traversed this mighty country Mongolia, from East to West across its expanse of over one and a half million square kilometers, you would not cross one single fence or tarmacked road. It's wild, unfarmed, sparsely populated and, amazingly beautiful. Mongolia's vast open wilderness, clear air, and sunshine combined with the magnificent fence-free riding experience makes for a heady adventure holiday not to be missed!

There is no destination in the world, we think you will agree, that can parallel Mongolia for a horseback trek! Will4Adventure proudly present Outer Mongolia by horseback!

Outline Itinerary

Day

Activity

1

Depart the UK.

2

Arrive Ulaan Baatar.

3

Fly to Murun and then drive to Hatgal.

4

In Hatgal - experience the Naadam festival - the Mongolian national festival of the '3 manly' sports - wrestling, horse racing, and archery. Also meet up with your head wrangler to discuss the forthcoming trek.

5 to 11

7 days of horse trekking. The route for your trek is set but with some flexibility built in to suit individual ability. It will encompass all of the following: lake shore, rolling steppe, nomadic ger visits, hot mineral springs, areas of historical interest, woodlands, meadows...

12

Head back overland to Murun, where we will catch our flight back to Ulaan Baatar.

13

Last day of sightseeing - a chance to buy some Mongolian riding boots at the Black Market and a visit to Gandan Monastery and the Giant Buddha.

14

Transfers and flight home.

Timing
This is a July expedition with a view to getting the best of Mongolia's weather and culture with the Naadam festival. Visibility should be fine, and the chance of rain low. However, bring waterproofs as advised in the packing list, and warm clothes for the chilly evenings.

Equipment
The kit list specifically required for this expedition will be posted to you in our client's expedition handbook. Largely speaking little is required of you - a 3 season sleeping bag and a set of waterproofs may be the only things you need to buy prior to departure - plus some riding boots once you set foot in Mongolia, (which make an excellent souvenir for taking home).

Personal Preparation
Complete beginners should not be put off trying this for an experience though it would definitely help if you spend a little time and money on one or two horse riding lessons. (If anything this will help you gain some confidence around horses which is key to learning the skills for riding and operating with them out in the field). The local wranglers who accompany us on the trek are highly skilled and will work hard to see that you enjoy yourself at whatever level you are presently at.

Roughing it
All our trips involve a degree of 'roughing it'. On trek, showers are rarely available, though we always camp by the lake or by a river for a fresh water swim! Food is basic and is a simple fare incorporating fresh local lamb or beef. Vegetarians can be catered for - but quite honestly if this is your diet, you should not expect any great meals - vegetables and fruit are few and far between. The hotels we use in
Ulaan Baatar and Murun are clean and comfortable and good places to relax, while not ostentatious.

Price (excluding international flights) : UK £1450

Price includes

  • Western tour leader
  • Local translator
  • Local specialist horse wranglers
  • Park permits
  • Camping equipment
  • All accommodation
  • All in-country transport
  • Fully supported trek
  • Meals on trek

This price does not cover your meals when not on trek, such as when you are in Ulaan Baatar, nor will it cover any individual sightseeing undertaken. Other items not included: travel insurance, passports, visas, inoculations, excess baggage, additional days in Ulaan Baatar due to flight delays, and items of personal nature such as drinks, souvenirs and laundry. We would recommend bringing another $10 US per day to cover meals not provided and snacks etc. This will easily cover it.

Useful Info
Learn more about Mongolia and the Nadam Festival courtesy of these great clips from the BBC [click here]

We highly recommend this excellent DVD of a 20,000-mile motorcycle trip Ewan McGregor took around the world with best friend Charley Boorman (Ewan McGregor And Charley Boorman - Long Way Round (Special Edition)). The whole film is great and the Mongolia part is interesting and very well shot.
