Irish 3000s shamrock will4adventure Irish 3000's
After many years of walking and climbing in England, Scotland and Wales, I realised that I was guilty of neglecting that fine land over the Irish Channel. Furthermore when I learned that there were ten magnificent peaks to be had each above 3000 feet in altitude, incorporating superb wilderness, a day of the best grade 1 scrambling Britain has to offer, and more Guinness than you can shake a leaf of clover at … I was inspoired! Outline Itinerary - Arriving Dublin 28/05/07

Day

Climb peak no. 1 - Lugnaquillia 925m. Drive on to Kilkenny.

30/05

Hike up peak no. 2 in the Galtee Mountains - Galtymore 919m. Drive to Killarney.

31/05

An awesome day on the Reeks Ridge bags us six more, including Ireland's biggest: Carrauntoohil 1039m. Superb airy scrambling!

01/06

Head to the village of Cloghane. Climb the majestic Mt Brandon 952m.

Thurs 02/06

Relaxed start to the day, followed by an hour's drive to Kerry Airport for an afternoon flight home.

Please note that due to the mountains being scattered across southern Ireland, the driving is inescapable. We should be car bound for no more than 10 hours total in the week.

Equipment
The kit list specifically required for this trip will be sent to you upon receiving your registration details. But in the meantime consider buying some good walking boots and start wearing them in … now. No technical kit is required, though you should have kit for cold and wet weather - even if this is a June trip!

Level of Fitness
The first two days are really quite reasonable, and are a good warm up for days three and four, which can be more demanding. Do consider exercising regularly each week to develop your cardiovascular system and stamina. At weekends, go and explore some countryside, maybe take a pack and do some camping. As a rule of thumb, if you can comfortably walk 8 miles - then you should be fine on this trip.

Price (excluding flights): UK £450

Maximum number of places on this trip: 10

Price includes:

  •  Leader / client ratio not exceeding 1:5

  •  B&B accommodation

  •  All in-country transport

Flights
These should be arranged independently. See www.ryanair.co.uk for some ridiculously cheap fares - should cost you no more than £50 return, depending on when you book. Note: arrange your flights to start at Dublin and return from Kerry!
