“Barely the age of 19, and with just a one-way ticket, I landed in Miami ready to begin my travelling adventures. With just a £1,000 stashed around my body and no working visa I had little idea about where I was headed or what I should be doing.”
Travel in any form is not without risk. But then again that’s how it’s meant to be. However if we are well prepared with information based upon practical experience and sound learning this helps us to make good decisions and thus minimise risk to an acceptable level. Our Gap Year Safety courses are designed to equip you with the skills needed to negotiate travel in a world of uncertainty. We offer this training through two differing avenues – each covering the same set of objectives but delivered to suit the needs of different people.
The Gap Year Safety Briefing (1 day) For some, the gap year is a moment between careers, a chance to step back, a change in direction and an opportunity to take a fresh perspective on life. This is a one-day classroom course that helps you plan your trip, teaches you how to take care of yourself in unfamiliar lands, and makes you better able to deal with the unforeseen.
Price: £160 including:
Course dates for 2011:
Location: Castleton, the Peak District Course numbers: 6 – 12 Combine this with our 2 day Outdoor First Aid course to complete the experience for an additional price of £99 (price excludes accommodation and food – though we can help you find somewhere from campsite to B&B).
The Gap Year Traveller Exercise (2 days) This course is unique. It delivers its objectives through the means of a hands-on exercise with feedback and discussion throughout. Perfect for the younger traveller this is a practical exercise that aims to simulate the travelling experience. We cover the same objectives as our one day Gap Year Safety Briefing but for the most part swap the seminar room for the streets, the markets and the cafes of Sheffield. Course content:
Price per person: £175.00* including:
Course dates for 2011:
Exercise Scenario / Background It’s been a long flight, the casseroled beef served on a bed of congealed rice is already a distant memory and a wave of excitement washes through your body only tempered by the question “What have I done!?” Welcome to Anytown, where your gap year begins! “When you land in Anytown the blatant lack of tourist information hits you like an avalanche, quickly followed by a wave of taxi drivers touting for your business ... Washing and toilet facilities, where they exist, range from primitive to modern ... The hills surrounding the city, like an ornate frame to an ugly picture, make you realise why this is such a gem of a location not to be missed ...” The Tough Guide to Travel You need somewhere to stay, something to get you there, something to eat and your budget is about £15 for the day. And now some strange man wants to carry your backpack for you ... What do you do now? Course Location: Sheffield Course numbers: 6 – 12 *Meals are not included and we ask that you bring £20 to cover these expenses. Combine this with our 2 day Outdoor First Aid course course to complete the experience for an additional price of £99 (price excludes accommodation and food – though we can help you find somewhere from campsite to B&B). Private Group Bookings are taken for this course. Contact us with your preferred date(s) that suit you and the numbers and we'll get back to you asap with all the details.
Schools We offer a one day service for sixth form students. Email us to arrange for training at your school.
Why choose Will4Adventure for your gap year training? We have over 20 years of hard earned, worldwide travel experience: trekking through the jungles of Asia and South America to climbing the heights of mountains of the greater ranges, bartering in the souqs of Marrakech to ‘negotiating’ with corrupt coppers in Barquisimeto (Venezuela). We have led countless student first expeditions to the corners of the globe and hence we are best placed to provide essential and current safety advice through this gap year safety brief.
