Essential Peru - The
Inca Trail and Machu Picchu
Arrives Lima 2nd September 2007
No this is not a Peruvian pan pipes and drums compilation cd, (whatever
the trip title suggests!) - but what must be seen
if you are visiting this famous South American country for the first
time.
Peru is a country richly blessed with its mountain ranges cutting through
swathes of beautiful scenery. The scenery of the Inca Trail is only
one element of this magical trek into the ancient Inca civilization.
This trail combines natural beauty, history and sheer mystery with an
awe-inspiring destination. The ruins that adorn the route whet the appetite
all the more for what must be one of the archaeological wonders of the
World - Machu Picchu.
Altitude is a common problem encountered by many who tread this way.
To counter this we have a generous acclimitisation period which further
explores a diverse array of destinations within Southern Peru that will
not fail to impress!
Highlights
- Sightseeing in the Colca Canyon, pre-Inca ruins and tombs, and the flight of the Condors.
- Trekking through mountains and jungle on the world famous Inca Trail.
- Emerging finally through the Sun Gate, and seeing for the first time the ancient Inca city: Machu Picchu!

Timing
This is a September expedition with a view to getting the last of Peruvian
dry weather, but without the usual high season hordes. Visibility should
be good, and the chance of rain low. However, bring waterproofs as advised
in the packing list, and warm clothes for the higher altitudes.
Equipment
The kit list specifically required for this expedition will be posted
on our website around July. But in the meantime consider buying some good
walking boots and start wearing them in
now. No technical kit is
required, though a 3 season plus sleeping bag will be much appreciated
at the higher altitudes.
Level of Fitness for the Treks
The trekking is varied because we do two treks in two very different regions.
The first on the Isla del Sol is high on a broad ridge line overlooking
coves and bays, reminiscent maybe of Mediteranean coastline. The Inca
Trail is a well worn track cutting through mountains and jungle alike.
The second day in particular does involve a steep hill. Many people do
this each year who are only moderately fit, but the fitter you are the
more you will enjoy yourself on the treks. If you normally don't get out
much it is never too soon to start. Exercise regularly each week to develop
your cardiovascular system and stamina. At weekends, go and explore some
countryside, maybe take a pack and do some camping. As a rule of thumb,
if you can comfortably walk 8 miles then you should be fine on this trip.
Roughing It
All our trips involve a degree of 'roughing it'. The accommodation we
use is comfortable but by no means ostentatious: it is selected not only
for high standards of hygiene and comfort but also on the basis that it
is a friendly and relaxing place to be.
